Was folgt, nachdem Design zur Künstlichkeit gerann? Cooperating closely with architects, observing and continuing the discipline s traditions, designing open spaces temporarily or for the long term, overcoming the crisis of artificiality - the challenges to contemporary landscape architecture are taking on increasingly complex dimensions. How can buildings and open space be integrated by means of design? What potential results from the interaction of landscape planning and the art of engineering? What are the consequences of design chasing after artificiality? Using examples from numerous contemporary landscape, urban, and private propects and in thematic essays by renowned authors (e.g., Karl Ganser, Thies Schröder, Christian Welzbacher), this attractive book reveals the pioneering responses that contemporary landscape architects offer to such central questions.

The urgency for policies to plan and manage the European Mediterranean coastal landscape is now evident: along the Latin Arch exceptional landscape values are accompanied by a growing anthropic pressure that is speeding up its transformations, creating significant problems; it is here, more than in other places, that the challenge posed by the preservation-development pair emerges. This study looks at the strategies developed within three protected coastal landscapes that have taken up the challenge. Interpreted as test laboratories for landscape policies, they give precious cues for the planning and management of the ordinary coastal landscape.

The book aims to identify the prevalent characteristics of the Tuscan landscape in the fourteenth century through the artistic and literary expressions of two of the main protagonists of the century, Giotto and Boccaccio. Emerging from a critical reading of the Decameron by Boccaccio and the paintings by Giotto is the relationship between fourteenth-century man and nature: having overcome the fear of existence, man is aware of the territory/landscape and his capacity of control over nature. This emerges in the relationship between the city and the landscape outside the walls, in the two artists' careful observation of nature, in the sense of belonging to places, in the role of open spaces, in the conditions of well-being of the environment, in the sense of protection and security; and it is also highlighted in the characteristics of the landscape, such as the sense of proximity, distance, time and aesthetics, in relation above all to gardens and the countryside. From the studies performed there emerges a curiosity that was not yet capable of expressing itself in autonomous forms, but was already appreciable in the innovative techniques heralding the next century.

This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion. This implies a processual space and new aesthetics of sense and therefore presupposes new themes able to redefine the physical-relational relationships by combining cultural roots, functional requirements and spatial layouts.
